England’s record champions announced a new coach eight days after dismissing Ruben Amorim. It’s an old friend at Old Trafford.

Former professional Michael Carrick is the new coach of Manchester United. The “Red Devils” announced this on Tuesday evening. The 44-year-old will be in charge of the struggling traditional club until the end of the season.

On January 5th, the English record champions (20 titles, like Liverpool FC) parted ways with previous coach Rúben Amorim. United are currently only seventh in the Premier League and are already 17 points behind leaders Arsenal. Most recently, under interim coach Darren Fletcher, they were eliminated from the FA Cup at home against Brighton & Hove Albion (1:2).

Carrick played for Manchester between 2006 and 2018, winning the Champions League once and the championship five times with the club. “Being responsible for Manchester United is an honor,” Carrick is now quoted in the club statement. He knows what it takes to be successful.

Immediately after the end of his professional career, Carrick worked as an assistant coach under Ole Gunnar Solskjær for United. He then briefly supported José Mourinho in the same role. In autumn 2021 he also stepped in as interim coach in Manchester for three games (two wins, one draw). From October 2022 until the summer of last year, Carrick was head coach of second division club Middlesbrough FC.

The former midfielder has to prepare his new team for one of the most difficult tasks of all right at the start of his term in office. On Saturday, United will face city rivals Manchester City, coached by former Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, in the Premier League. In the first half of the season, the “Cityzens” won the duel 3-0.
