The archaeologists were unable to determine how long the cannon had been there, or whether it was ever used. But it remains an interesting find, because when you say trenches, you usually think of the First World War.
“In Pervijze we were actually first looking for trenches from the First World War,” Verdegem continues. “We also found a segment of it on the same site. But of course, so close to the coast, and the German headquarters that were located there. That is something that is often forgotten that the Second World War also has an impact on our soil archive.”
