Marjolein van der Meer Mohr will step down as mayor of the municipality of Rucphen next year. She will announce this on Tuesday. Van de Meer Mohr has been mayor of the West Brabant municipality since 2011. She will permanently resign from her position in mid-January 2027.
The mayor, who recently turned 65, believes it is time for a new chapter in her life. She looks back on her term of office with a ‘warm look’. She leaves with ‘mixed feelings’.
“I look back with great gratitude on the years in which I was able to fulfill this role. Together with residents, colleagues and our partners, we have worked on a municipality that is strong, committed and progressive. It feels like the right time to hand over the baton next year and spend more time with my family,” said the mayor.
Visible driver
Marjolein van der Meer Mohr is known for her approachable approach where she is close to the residents. “I have always experienced it as a privilege to be mayor and especially mayor.”
She continues: “For me, beautiful moments, such as the visit of the king and queen, were special recognitions that confirm that our municipality matters. But even in difficult times I have personally experienced the strength and solidarity that lies within our community.”
Long tenure
Marjolein van der Meer Mohr is one of the longest-serving mayors in our province. She is known as a connector within the region, including her role as chairman of the West Brabant mayoral circle. The director is in her third term of office.
The lawyer from Haarlem started her political career in 1998 as a municipal councilor for the VVD in the former municipality of Westvoorne. She then served as alderman of the same municipality from 2002 to 2005. Until her appointment as mayor of the municipality of Rucphen, she worked as an independent legal advisor.
Arson
In 2015, Van der Meer Mohr made national headlines when her car was set on fire in front of her apartment in Sint Willebrord. It remains unclear what is behind the arson. At the time, she called the incident a targeted, cowardly action and stated that she would not be intimidated by violence.
The city council must look for a successor this year. Mayor van der Meer Mohr will continue to fulfill her duties until her retirement.
