“This is my most special find ever,” Henk from Heemskerk says to NH by telephone a few days later. He saw the jaw last Thursday morning during a walk with his dog, near the North Pier.
He regularly walks along the high tide line and often finds objects washed ashore. But when something gold-colored glowed in the sand, he immediately realized that this was no ordinary find.
“I first ran it over with my foot. When I picked it up, I immediately saw that it was a bone. I wasn’t shocked, because I often see bones lying around. But the gold teeth made it very special.”
Possible match with missing person
Since there was no one on the beach that day to hand it over, the alert hiker took the bone home. There he immediately called in assistant beach explorer Ruud van Wilgenburg.
“He had the jaw loose in his hands and gave it to me,” says Van Wilgenburg. Not much later, the police were called and the jaw, which is believed to be human, was handed over to the officers. “Then I put it in a sealing bag.”
The police confirm the discovery of the most likely human remains.
