You stand in the kitchen, look at the energy bill and sigh. Higher again. You think about a different way of heating, but quickly give up. Because as soon as you hear a word like ‘heat pump’, you immediately think of major renovations and sky-high investments. Good news: that is not always necessary! Your house probably already is suitable for a heat pump.
In this article you will see the biggest misunderstandings at a glance and you will receive useful tips to take the first steps. Excited already? Take a look whether your house is suitable.
Why a heat pump is worth it
If a heat pump is properly tailored to your home, you will use (partly) less gas because the heat pump extracts heat from the environment and your central heating boiler does not have to step in as often. This can ensure more even heat in your home. A first logical step could be the hybrid heat pump that works together with your current boiler.

The biggest myths debunked
“A heat pump can only be used with underfloor heating.”
Wrong! This is perhaps the most persistent myth. Many people think that you absolutely must have underfloor heating, but a heat pump also works with the radiators you already have. Of course, underfloor heating can make the system even more efficient, but it is certainly not a must.
“It takes up a huge amount of space.”
That just depends. For a hybrid heat pump – a popular choice – you need a compact indoor unit and an outdoor unit. That combination often fits in and around your house, without you having to sacrifice an extra room.
“You first have to properly insulate your entire house.”
Not true. Insulation helps to keep the heat in your home better, but that does not mean that everything has to be perfect right away. You can often start with a heat pump while improving step by step. Consider, for example, cavity wall insulation, so that heat is less likely to escape through the walls. Will you continue with insulation later, such as tackling the roof or floor? Then the heat pump can simply be adjusted accordingly.
What can you do now?
Do you want to know whether your home is suitable for a heat pump? Start with these steps:
- Look at your current situation
Does your boiler need replacing? Are you going to renovate or do you notice that some rooms have difficulty getting warm? By looking at where you are now, you can see more quickly whether a heat pump is a logical next step for you. - Check whether your house is suitable
Many houses are already (partly) suitable for a heat pump. Sometimes small adjustments are enough, such as better insulation in a few places. This doesn’t have to happen all at once. - Look at costs and subsidies
Calculate the costs and subsidies so that you have a realistic picture of the investment and savings. - Ask for advice
Can’t quite figure it out yourself? A specialist can then take a look with you and explain which solution is suitable your house and plans.
