More than two and a half years ago, traces of crystal meth were found in a doping sample from Jason George. Now the professional talks about the difficult time.
Two-time national player Jason George has spoken publicly about his drug addiction for the first time after serving his doping ban. “I needed the drugs, they became my medicine against the pain of no longer feeling fun playing basketball,” explained the basketball professional, who is now under contract with the Würzburg Baskets, in an interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”.
The winger emphasized that he had taken the substances to anesthetize and not to improve performance.
George began his drug use during his time at Bayern Munich. “It would have been about four years ago, around Christmas time. There was the incident with my coach,” reported the 24-year-old. He then left the club.
Until his positive doping test, George said he was “just functioning”. He never knowingly consumed crystal meth, which was detected in his sample more than two and a half years ago.
Although it initially seemed as if “the world was ending”, the basketball player now sees the test and the subsequent ban as a turning point. “Something drastic had to happen. Now I know that the positive test was ultimately the best thing that could have happened for me,” he said looking back. “I think I wasn’t far from an overdose.”
