Early in the new year there is sad news from equestrian sports. Three animals die in a competition. An authority is investigating the case.

Three horses died after accidents during a racing day in the English town of Sunbury-on-Thames (near London). This is reported by the BBC. The six-year-old Caliph Du Berlais fell and injured his shoulder so badly that he had to be put down. The horse was partly owned by former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Coach Paul Nicholls spoke of a “sad day”.

The horses Wertpol and Peso also suffered fatal injuries on Saturday. Both animals could not be saved despite veterinary care. A spokesman for the organizers said the horses’ welfare was a top priority and expressed their condolences to the owners.

The British Horseracing Authority, the British equestrian sport regulator, said it would investigate all incidents. So far there is “no common factor” that led to the accidents.
