Domenico Tedesco snatches a title from Leroy Sané and Ilkay Gündogan and wins with Fenerbahce in the Supercup final against Galatasaray.
Former Bundesliga coach Domenico Tedesco celebrated his first title with Fenerbahce Istanbul in Turkey. The 40-year-old was able to celebrate winning the Turkish Super Cup after winning 2-0 (1-0) in the final against champions Galatasaray Istanbul. The goals for the Tedesco team in the Atatürk Olympic Stadium were scored by Matteo Guendouzi (28th minute) and Jayden Oosterwolde (48th).
At Galatasaray, ex-Bayern professional Leroy Sané was in the starting line-up and was substituted shortly before the end. Former national team captain Ilkay Gündogan came on as a substitute in the second half. Top striker Victor Osimhen was missing from the Africa Cup of Nations, where he is in the semi-finals with Nigeria.
Galatasaray qualified for the final with a 4-1 win against Trabzonspor. Fenerbahce made it to the final with a 2-0 win against Samsunspor. Fener is currently in second place in the league, three points behind Galatasaray.
Special praise for ex-Herthaner
“I’m very happy about our first title together,” said Tedesco: “But the triumph belongs to the players. They are the ones who fought and played on the pitch. They deserve to be celebrated.”
Fenerbache’s Matteo Guendouzi celebrates his goal
The coach gave special praise to ex-Herthan player Guendouzi, who only arrived in Istanbul during the week after his winter move from Lazio and was immediately convincing: “He played as if he had been with us for eight months.”
Tedesco coached FC Schalke 04 and RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. He then spent two years as Belgium’s national coach before moving to Fenerbahce on the Bosporus. The German-Italian was initially criticized there, but in the past few months he has been able to stabilize the team.
