America continues to grapple with the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on Wednesday. Prominent personalities and demonstrators react with a mixture of anger towards Donald Trump and his government and condolences for Good and her family.

A candlelight vigil for Good was held in Minneapolis on Wednesday evening. Accompanied by protests against the increased presence of ICE in the city.

At the same time, demonstrations were held in cities such as Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles and New York.

Vigils and nationwide protests

On Thursday, the Minnesota Timberwolves held a moment of silence for Good at Target Center Arena before their game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. “Our community has suffered another unspeakable tragedy,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said during the moment of silence. “We would simply like to express our condolences and our sincerest wishes, prayers and thoughts to the families, loved ones and everyone who has been greatly affected by what happened.”

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz previously announced that he had put the state’s National Guard on standby. This came as the Trump administration insisted that ICE would not back down despite the outrage over Good’s killing. President Trump and his allies described the act as justified. Although video footage suggests Good was trying to leave the location when she was shot.

Reactions from politics and society

Several well-known entertainment figures made it clear that they do not believe the government’s narrative.

Singer Billie Eilish shared several images on her Instagram Stories on Friday condemning ICE. One of them read: “ICE IS A FEDERALLY FUNDED AND SUPPORTED TERRORIST GROUP UNDER THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY THAT HAS DONE NOTHING TO MAKE OUR STREETS SAFER.” Eilish also published another post with the names of the 32 people who died in ICE custody during 2025. One of the deadliest years in the agency’s 22-year history.

Sonic Youth guitarist and vocalist Thurston Moore also commented on the shooting on social media, writing, “2026 will be a year of extreme federal violence. Starting immediately.” Moore also shared a Refuse Fascism post that referred to ICE as “Trump’s Gestapo” on his Instagram account.

Media, satire and celebrity voices

“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert sharply criticized the Trump administration’s response during his broadcast Thursday night. “It looks like a federal agent unprovoked shot and killed an American citizen in front of witnesses on a city street. But the government is telling you you didn’t see that,” he said. “They claim you saw him respond to an act of domestic terrorism. They tell you to believe them. And not your eyes.”

“This administration’s message is clear,” Colbert added. “Only they determine the truth, and when their forces come to your city, you obey or die. And if you die, you obviously disobeyed.”

“Stranger Things” actor Joe Keery attacked Trump in an Instagram post. He wrote “zero human decency, stop this man” over a screenshot of Trump’s Truth Social post that called Good a “professional agitator” who tried to run over ICE agents.

Marvel actor Simu Liu wrote on social media that he was “deeply appalled by the murderous actions of ICE agents in Minneapolis. Don’t be manipulated by rhetoric; there is a video and it clearly shows the murder of an unarmed woman driving away. GONE. Immigration laws can be enforced in a dignified manner. fuck ICE forever.”

The Trump administration continued its baseless attempts to vilify Good as a violent agitator and domestic terrorist. On Friday, Good’s wife, Becca Good, released her first public statement. In it, she wrote, Good “lived by an overarching belief: that there is kindness in the world and we must do everything we can to find it where it exists and nurture it where it needs to grow.”

“The people who did this had fear and anger in their hearts,” she added, “and we need to show them a better way.”
