… better and better!

The Transfermarkt database is enriched by another milestone: the 1983/84 season of the Oberliga Südwest is available with all detailed information. The champions were FC 08 Homburg, who only became leaders for the first time on matchday 31, replacing Eintracht Trier, who were unbeaten in 22 games and only lost their lead with a 2-1 away defeat against today’s second division team SV Elversberg.

Well-known teams were there that season: Borussia Neunkirchen, Wormatia Worms, FK Pirmasens, Trier, Homburg as well as 1. FSV Mainz 05 and Elversberg. The two promoted teams Röchling Völklingen and SpVgg Wirges went down one class. The latter club even lost 1:9 to fellow relegation candidate SV Leiwen.

The later successful coach Klaus Toppmöller (FSV Salmrohr) became the top scorer with 27 goals, closely followed by Harald Kohr (Trier, 25 goals), father of today’s Mainz professional Dominik Kohr. In addition to Toppmöller and Kohr, other well-known faces were there at the time, such as Achim Wilbois (Trier), the ex-Dortmunder Jürgen Wilhelm (Hassia Bingen), the later professionals Thomas Dooley and Kay Friedmann (Homburg), Axel Roos (Kaiserslautern Amateurs) and Eugen Hach (Pirmasens).
