A total of 142,753 euros was destroyed. The damaged asphalt on Minckelersstraat is by far the largest item of damage. According to the mayor, this repair will cost the municipality about 65,000 euros.

Heated asphalt

A group of about fifty to sixty young people went on a rampage in Hilversum-Oost during New Year’s Eve. They set cars on fire, set off a fire bomb, blew up mailboxes with heavy fireworks and pelted the emergency services with fireworks and stones. It was so bad that the mobile unit was called in.

The group also started a fire on Minckelersstraat. As a result, the road surface became so heated that serious damage was caused.

Fears of death

Residents in East felt unsafe that night. Frederique Durlacher already said that she and her children were terrified. That started with throwing heavy fireworks at the window. Not much later, her mailbox was blown up. Days later, the Hilversum resident discovered that her barn door had also been demolished and that personal items had been stolen.

The amount of damage for Hilversum increases by approximately 77,000 euros because waste bins, street furniture and traffic signs, among other things, have been destroyed. The total amount may still increase because not all damage has yet been identified. However, the largest damages have been inventoried.

Less unrest

Van den Top emphasizes that private damage and damage to property belonging to the police, fire brigade or companies have not yet been added to the municipal damage amount.
What is already clear is that the damage in 2026 will be many times greater than last year.

In 2025, Hilversum had to pay just under 71,000 euros to restore everything, which was already double the amount compared to 2024. “There were fewer riots then,” as Van den Top describes it.
