Since last week, Overeem and his colleagues have been driving all routes in the city all night long to prevent switches or overhead lines from freezing. “The overhead line is the most important: if it doesn’t work and you can’t get power, nothing happens at all. Then we have nowhere to go.”
The GVB started using trams at night in 2021. To Overeem’s pleasure. “Normally you drive with a car full of passengers and you have to stop at every stop. Then you don’t have time to enjoy the city.”
Despite the harsh winter weather, the GVB continued to operate almost without any problems in recent days, while public transport in other cities did experience many problems. Partly thanks to these night trams.
