The Souza transfer has nothing to do with a Udogie sale.
The Spurs have been playing at the limit in the full-back positions for ages now.
Porro is an absolute regular on the right and has been completely outplayed since last season and consistently plays in the last groove.
Udogie would also be absolutely placed on the left side. Unfortunately, he continues to struggle with short and medium-term injuries.
Spence therefore steps in for him on the left side. He does a pretty good job (was even taken to the national team several times by Tuchel). However, especially because of his strong right foot, he is simply not an LV, but an RV.
If you follow Tottenham you know that Spence is absolutely strong defensively. However, very little happens forward because he has to play on the wrong side.
Ben Davies has always been a left-back, but he also has frequent absences due to injuries. In addition, due to his advanced age, he is no longer permanently competitive at fullback. Since last season at the latest, he has only been used on a temporary basis in IV, if at all.
Tottenham have needed another left-back for a long time. In all likelihood, this will now be Souza. But he will not be Udogie’s successor.
It’s been a long time since Tottenham took action here and it’s disastrous that this is only happening now.
It’s good that this is finally being recognized and addressed.
However, the fact that this is once again just a 19-year-old, inexperienced player, and whether he can perform well at this level is a different matter.
