TOWe have left a 2025 full of celestial events, but 2026 will not be any different. Starting immediately in January, the month in which the sky offers one of its most evocative moments. It is an astronomical event capable of transforming even the most ordinary of evenings into a small event: the opposition of Jupiter, the giant of the Solar System which returns to dominate the celestial vault with an extraordinary brightness.
Opposition of Jupiter: a rare phenomenon that lights up the night
Opposition is a geometric configuration in which an outer planet, such as Jupiter, it is located exactly on the opposite side of the Sun, with the Earth in the middle. It is a condition that amplifies the visibility of the planet, because it makes it rise at sunset and keeps it in the sky until dawn. In the case of Jupiter, the effect is particularly spectacular: its light reaches a magnitude of approximately –2.7, a value that indicates a very high intensity on the astronomical scale, where negative numbers correspond to the brightest objects. During the opposition on January 10, the planet’s disk will appear larger than usual, with an apparent diameter of about 45.7 arcseconds. A detail that may seem technical, but which actually means something very simple: Jupiter appears to be in the best conditions of the year to be observedeven without tools.
Where to find it in the sky and why it is so easy to recognize it
On these January nights, Jupiter moves in the constellation Geminia region of the sky easily identifiable when looking east shortly after sunset. When the planet exceeds 30 degrees above the horizon, about two hours after sunset, its light becomes even more stable and intense, making the observation particularly clear. The presence of the Moonwhich arises later in these weeks, it allows Jupiter to shine undisturbed until around 1 ambefore the moonlight begins to compete with its brightness.

An opportunity to be observed even with simple tools
Opposition is not just a gift for those who like to roll their eyes. It’s also a perfect time for those who want to get into amateur astronomy. Good quality binoculars are enough to distinguish the four main satellites of the planet: Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, known as “Medici satellites” because they were discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610 and dedicated to the Medici family. With a small telescope, the planet’s disk appears more defined and variations in brightness and position of the satellites can be seen over the course of a few hours.
A month full of astronomical events
Jupiter’s opposition is not the only phenomenon that makes this start of the year special. January 2026 is a particularly generous month: has already offered the first supermoona full Moon that appears larger because it is at perigee, the closest point to the Earth, and the peak of the Quadrantidsa meteor shower known for its intensity. To complete the picture comes the comet C/2024 E1 (Wierzchos)which on January 20 reaches perihelion, that is, the minimum distance from the Sun. A passage that could make it visible even to the naked eye in the best conditions.
The best places in Italy to admire the gas giant
The quality of observation depends greatly on the location chosen. The areas far from light pollution allow you to capture details that are lost in the city. The Alps, the Apennines, the Chianti hills and the Dolomites offer ideal night views, with wide horizons and clear skies. Even protected areas such as the Abruzzo National Park are perfect for those looking for an immersive experience. The Italian astronomical observatories, often active with guided evenings, represent another possibility: a way to combine the wonder of observation with the expertise of experts.
Not just outside the city
Thanks, however, to the extraordinary brightness of Jupiter, even urban contexts can offer a good vision. Panoramic terraces, city parks and elevated points with an unobstructed view towards the east allow you to easily recognize the planet, especially in the early evening hours. So here’s that too January 2026 opens under a luminous sign that crosses the night and remember how the sky, even in its most predictable manifestations, always manages to restore a sense of wonder.
