The German tennis team missed out on reaching the quarter-finals of the United Cup.
Alexander Zverev’s team was eliminated after the bitter 3-0 defeat against Poland after the hoped-for support from the Netherlands failed to materialize in the final Group F game in Sydney. The Dutch also lost their duel with Poland 0-3.
Zverev scoreless against Poland
The German team, which had started the tournament successfully with a 3-0 win against the Netherlands, had previously squandered its good starting position against Poland. Zverev, third in the world rankings from Hamburg, lost to Hubert Hurkacz 3:6, 4:6. Even in the mixed doubles alongside Laura Siegemund, he couldn’t win a point with a score of 6:7 (6:8) 3:6.
In between, Eva Lys was a clear outsider against the six-time team Grand Slam-Winner Iga Swiatek impressive. Lys ultimately had to admit defeat to the world number two with 6:3, 3:6, 4:6.
Champion two years ago
The group winners and the best group runner-up per venue make it to the top eight. In 2024, the German team won the preparatory tournament for the Australian Open, which begins on January 18th this year.
