FC Bayern Basketball achieved its second Euroleague victory under new coach Svetislav Pesic in the basement children’s duel against Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz thanks to a furious comeback. For the people of Munich, progress remains a mammoth task.

Defense, defense – and again: disciplined defense: That’s what basketball coach Svetislav Pesic expects from his teams first and foremost. And from this disciplined defense, points and, above all, victories should then be achieved in the attack.

In this respect, the new coach of the Bayern basketball players was at least partially satisfied at the end of a strenuous Wednesday evening. Because his Munich team won the basement duel with Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz 96:89 (38:46) on the 20th matchday of the Euroleague. And he was certainly also able to congratulate his strongest thrower in the dressing room: Andreas Obst, who set a new personal Euroleague record with 37 points. He paved the way for the victory of Upper Bavaria.

Getting ahead in the Euroleague remains a mammoth task

But the defensive thing didn’t always work. Because if you watched Pesic throughout the evening, the satisfaction was only really visible at the end of the game, when his team forced the game to their side with a furious final quarter. The score in the last quarter was 36:20, before that the weakened Spanish team was significantly stronger.

For the Munich team, the late success is only the seventh victory in what has been a difficult Euroleague season so far. After all, they have now climbed past Baskonia to 16th place out of the 20 teams. Getting through to the play-ins, for which tenth place is required, remains a mammoth task. Red Star Belgrade currently has eleven wins in 20 games there.

In order to improve there, the Munich team needs a significant increase in performance compared to Wednesday. But Pesic has only been Munich’s coach for half a month, and he’ll certainly instill a little more in his players about the defense in the coming weeks.
