The former HSV professional recently went to hospital because of stomach pain. The investigations produced worrying findings.

Former England international player and coach Kevin Keegan has been diagnosed with cancer. His family announced this on Tuesday. The 74-year-old had previously been admitted to hospital due to persistent symptoms.

“Kevin was recently admitted to the hospital for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal discomfort,” the statement said. “These tests have led to a diagnosis of cancer for which Kevin will now begin treatment.” The family thanked the medical staff for their care and support.

Keegan’s long-time club Newcastle United also reacted to the news. “Our former player and coach Kevin Keegan will undergo treatment after being diagnosed with cancer,” the Premier League club said in a statement. “King Kev. Our thoughts are with you and we wish you a full and speedy recovery.”

Between 1977 and 1980, Keegan, nicknamed “Mighty Mouse”, played in the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV, with whom he was German champion in 1979 and twice voted European Footballer of the Year. He previously experienced his most successful time at Liverpool FC (1971 to 1976). With the “Reds” he won three championship titles, the UEFA Cup twice and the European Cup once. In the Premier League he also played for Southampton and Newcastle United.

Between 1999 and 2001 he coached the England national team. He resigned from his post after the 1-0 defeat against Germany in the last game at the old Wembley Stadium. He also coached Newcastle, Fulham and Manchester City.
