British boxing star Anthony Joshua was injured in an accident in Nigeria and two of his friends died. Apparently the experience is now having an impact on his sporting future.

Former world champion Anthony Joshua is apparently quitting boxing. His uncle, Adedamola Joshua, announced this in an interview. “The most important thing is that he has ended his boxing career. We are very happy about that because every time he fights in the ring we are completely emotional,” Adedamola Joshua told the Nigerian news site The Punch. The former superstar told his family this after his serious car accident.

“Every time he goes down, it’s as if our hearts are jumping out of our chests. All the emotions we experience during his fights are a big burden for us too,” his uncle continued. “Now that he has announced his retirement at the height of his popularity, we are relieved.”

Anthony Joshua was released from hospital after a serious car accident in Nigeria on New Year’s Day. The 36-year-old only suffered minor injuries; two other people who were in the car with him died. Joshua, who grew up in Great Britain as the son of Nigerian immigrants, was traveling from the economic metropolis of Lagos to visit his mother in the city of Sagamu at the time.

The two men who died in the accident were friends of Joshua, his personal trainer and his strength coach. According to local authorities, one of the vehicle’s tires burst, which then crashed into a stationary truck at high speed.

Joshua became Olympic champion in 2012 and was then world heavyweight champion for several years. It was only in December that he caused a stir with his victory against American internet star Jake Paul in Miami. Some experts had assumed that he would continue his career.
