National goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen was hoping for minutes in the Supercup in Saudi Arabia. Now there is the next injury.

Next setback for Marc-André ter Stegen: The national soccer goalkeeper was injured during FC Barcelona’s preparation for the Spanish Super Cup and has already left Saudi Arabia.

The ex-Gladbacher ended training 25 minutes earlier, as the newspaper “Sport” reported. As the club announced, he had to leave to undergo medical tests in Barcelona. It was not initially known what the injury was or how serious the injury was.

Barça also confirmed that second-team goalkeeper Diego Kochen will arrive in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. The Catalans will face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals. Regular goalkeeper Joan Garcia should be in goal anyway.

Ter Stegen hasn’t had it easy lately: he was replaced as the Catalans’ number one in the summer after many years and newcomer Joan García was appointed the new regular keeper by coach Hansi Flick. The German national goalkeeper, who had back surgery in July and took a long break due to injury, has only played one competitive game for Barça this season – almost two weeks ago in the national cup against CD Guadalajara (2-0).

However, the keeper needs match practice in order to be in the German goal at the World Cup. National coach Julian Nagelsmann actually plans him as number one for the World Cup next summer – but only if he plays regularly at the club.

There is also talk of a winter change: According to the Spanish news portal “Sport”, the 33-year-old is about to go on loan from FC Barcelona to relegation-threatened league rivals FC Girona from Catalonia. Meanwhile, the usually well-informed newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported that Ter Stegen is determined to stay in Barcelona and from there continue to fight for a place in the German squad for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Ter Stegen’s contract with Barcelona runs until 2028.
