In the away game in Nuremberg, the Kölner Haie ice hockey professionals didn’t let themselves be disturbed by a deficit. After a strong middle third, Cologne won 4:2 (0:1, 4:1, 0:0) at the Ice Tigers.
With this, the Haie built their winning streak in Germany Ice hockey-Liga (DEL) for ten wins in a row and also maintained their lead in the table in the second of five away games in a row with 83 points.
Brady Austin (23rd), Frederik Storm (28th), Oliwer Kaski (29th) and Maximilian Kammerer (38th) scored for the Rhinelanders. Jakob Ustorf (23rd) and Timo Bakos (32nd) could not prevent the Ice Tigers’ eighth home defeat. “We had a tough start, but then we did what we needed to do to win the game,” said Cologne’s top scorer Kaski (1 goal, 2 assists) after the game on “Magentasport”.
Cologne conceded a counterattack goal to make it 0-1
The game on Tuesday (January 6th, 2026) started quite well for the Nuremberg team. The hosts survived the first good phase in Cologne and then put the first exclamation mark after a goalless first majority.
Ustorf won the puck in the neutral zone and made an irresistible move. With his backhand, the man from Nuremberg then pushed the puck into the net to make it 1-0.
Quick equalizer in the second half
Until the end of the third came Cologne didn’t go beyond good approaches, so Marco Münzenberger had to say in the break interview with “Magentasport”: “We started well, but then played too complicated.”
The former also applied to the second third – but the latter did not. Cologne came out of the locker room with a lot of power and took advantage of the first promising chance to equalize. When a penalty was called for Nuremberg, Austin was there in the six-on-five and scored from the blue line to make it 1-1.
Cologne’s Storm and Kaski turn the game around in just a few seconds
This meant that the guests had the upper hand and followed up mercilessly. Within just 36 seconds, Storm took a 3-1 lead after a counterattack and Kaski with a deflected shot. Haie coach Kari Jalonen’s team put away the Nuremberg goal and a subsequent hit on the post.
Shortly before the end of the middle third, the Haie used a power play to restore the two-goal gap. Kaski pushed the puck halfway up the center. There Kammerer held the ladle in and deflected it into the goal to make it 4-2. Kammerer scored his 14th goal of the season and also scored in the sixth game in a row.
Fighting sharks get ahead
The DEL’s most dangerous team in the middle section of the game had once again set course in this round in Nuremberg. The final half started with the Sharks outnumbered when Jan Sennhenn had to go to the penalty box for tripping. However, the guests survived unscathed.
As a result, the Ice Tigers increased the pressure. However, Cologne held strong defensively and had the necessary luck when DEL top scorer Evan Barrett hit the post (53rd) and ultimately also had a reliable goalie Felix Brückmann (22 saves, 91.67 percent).
Even when Nuremberg took the goalkeeper off the ice three minutes before the end, the Cologne defense was outnumbered, so that the Haie were able to celebrate their next victory at the final siren.
We continue to Ingolstadt
Cologne’s long away trip continues on Friday (January 9, 2026, 7:30 p.m.) with the game at ERC Ingolstadt. Then we go to Augsburg and Bremerhaven before the Haie return to their own arena against Iserlohn.
