KLM will again cancel more than three hundred flights to and from Schiphol Airport on Tuesday due to the weather conditions. “This number may increase during Tuesday,” a spokesperson told the ANP news agency on Monday evening.
This Monday, more than half of all flights to and from Schiphol were canceled. There were actually 1,200 departure and arrival flights, but a total of 700 were canceled. KLM spoke of “exceptional weather conditions”, resulting in major inconvenience for travelers.
The problems at the airport were partly because the ‘snow fleet’ had insufficient capacity to clear all aircraft of snow and ice. In addition, fresh snow had to be continuously cleared from the runways, which led to additional delays.
The prospects for Tuesday are not much better. The Red Cross asked all regional departments on Monday evening to “an increased state of preparedness” to accommodate stranded travelers if necessary. A spokeswoman says that a small team of four people has already been sent to Schiphol.
There are currently no large-scale relief efforts with, for example, camp beds and blankets at stations. The organization wants to be able to deploy people quickly if necessary.
