It really bothered 79-year-old Catherine Keyl that so much emphasis was placed on her age by presenter Tijl Beckand during the recording of Het Perfecte Plaatje. “We had to get used to each other, let’s put it this way. In the beginning I thought: are you going to piss me off all the time?” the senior television diva said.

Victim

However, Catherine is articulate and that’s why Tijl’s taunting was over quickly, she thinks. “He thought he would find a victim in me, but that didn’t work out. He soon started talking about my age.”

According to her, it is not necessary to say all the time that she is that age. “But that in itself is also special, because I am the oldest participant who has ever participated.”

“Are you angry?”

What is the relationship like between Catherine and Tijl now? He tells in the Weekend that they recently met. “I saw Catherine the other day and she said, ‘Are you mad at me?’ I said, ‘No, not at all. I know how that works.’”

“I said: ‘You say to a journalist: ‘That Tijl Beckand, is he going to make a fool of me every time?’ That is then written down in a certain tone and then someone else picks it up again.’ I played with her and it was really fun and funny.”

Not easy

There is no argument, but Catherine is not the easiest person either, according to Tijl. “I would have really felt it if we had something. She’s just not that easy, but that’s just fun. (…) ‘Catherine is almost eighty and just says what she thinks. When you’re my age, you think twice. But I like that.”

Was it necessary to always mention her age? “Well, I can tell you: that was written by an editor and she is a woman. I said to influencer Rhodé: ‘You are the youngest candidate who has ever participated and Catherine is the oldest participant we have ever had!’ That’s really nice, isn’t it?”
