Bremen have to step up their game again due to the loss of Victor Boniface in the center of the attack. However, this is not an easy task in the winter transfer window.

A week before the first competitive game in 2026, Werder is in trouble because the squad is too thin in the center of the attack. After Victor Boniface’s injury-related absence, coach Horst Steffen only has Keke Topp available. However, the 21-year-old is still waiting for his first goal this Bundesliga season. As an emergency solution, Marco Grüll can also help out, as has already happened.

It is clear that Bremen want to improve again during the winter break. “This is of course a position that is needed and is undoubtedly there,” says Werder’s sporting director Peter Niemeyer.

We are working hard to find a solution.

Will a loan player come again?

Werder would like to sign the new striker “as quickly as possible,” said Niemeyer. The transfer window is open until February 2nd. But Bremen can hardly wait that long. After all, there are five games in the Bundesliga by then.

André Silva wore the Werder jersey in the last second half of the season. However, he only scored one goal for Bremen in the Bundesliga.

Most recently, Werder helped themselves in this position primarily with loan players. Before Boniface, the Portuguese André Silva came to the Weser for six months last winter. Niemeyer at least doesn’t want to rule out the possibility that Werder will buy a player this time. “We’re on the market. We’re looking at what options there are.” Nevertheless, the transfer window is even more difficult in winter. No club wants to give up one of its current top performers. And if so, then only for a lot of money.

“It would be good if we had a replacement,” says Steffen. So is an established goalscorer coming? Or does Werder have to hope for a breakthrough with a young talent? “I don’t want to give too much away,” says Steffen. “Anything is possible. We have a more limited selection in the winter because a lot of players are under contract. We want to add basic quality. If it’s possible.”
