Writer and artist Jani Toivola published a delicate post on Instagram, telling her brother that she was visiting Finland for the first time.
The brother living in Germany and Toivola have a common Kenyan father. The brother searched for his long-lost sibling a few years back and the duo went together to explore their roots in Kenya.
Their common father is dead, but other relatives, such as grandfather, were waiting in Kenya.
However, the brother, who now lives in Berlin, has traveled to Finland.
– We are united by a common Kenyan father. And now what has been started together to build quietly and carefully, Toivola writes on Instagram.
Showing feelings
Toivola writes that the brothers slowly dare to show each other different sides of themselves after the hospitality.
– Irritation and fatigue. The need to be quiet at times. That the other drinks coffee only in the mornings. And another with milk and throughout the day. That there are different fears and yet something the same. That we have a similar way of disappearing in the middle of a party. And that a smile is often the first thing that is offered to the unknown, he continues in his post.
The brother has a child the same age as Toivola’s daughter. The children are looking forward to getting to know each other.
– Our children took a sauna together and ate biscuits in the shower, Toivola writes.
It is also happy that Toivola’s mother and sister met their brother for the first time.
– There was a big table and a bowl of spaghetti. The feeling that everyone was taking responsibility for a common moment. No one had to support everything alone. After eating, they spread around the living room. I didn’t clean up but focused on people.
A brother living in Germany once went in search of his Finnish brother with the help of a 30-year-old letter that Toivola’s mother had sent a letter to their father. Toivola’s existence was known in Kenya, as Toivola’s father had sent a picture of him as a baby to relatives. Toivola knew little about his father’s family, as his father left Toivola’s family when he was two years old.
