The Oscar candidate disappears from the screen for a long time. Paul Mescal wants to play theater until 2028 and devote himself to his private life. Find out the background to his decision here.

Paul Mescal needs a break from acting. He landed the leading role in his two latest films, “The History of Sound” and “Hamnet” – which will be released in German cinemas in 2026. Now the actor may disappear from the screen until a major project is due in 2028.

Challenging roles and major Beatles project

In an interview with “The Guardian”, the Irishman and co-star and love interest Josh O’Connor from the drama “The History of Sound” gave insights into their roles, collaboration and the job as actors. In this context, the 29-year-old mentioned: “I’ve been here for five or six years now and consider myself very lucky. But I also realize that I can’t do this for that long.” He explained that indie films like Oliver Hermanus’ “The History of Sound,” in which Mescal and Josh O’Connor play two men who travel together in 1920 to record folk songs and discover their romantic connection to one another, “draw more from the well” than one might think.

The mime therefore announced: “People will get a break from me and I will get a break from them.” That’s his plan, in any case until filming begins on director Sam Mendes’ major Beatles project. Mescal will play the leading role of his namesake Paul McCartney in one of four films – each of which will portray a band member. The four biopics are scheduled to celebrate their theatrical release together in April 2028.

How does Paul Mescal imagine his film break?

Speaking to The Guardian, the actor revealed that he misses “being on stage”. He could therefore imagine “playing theater” for “a few years”. In addition to his passion for the theater stage, the Oscar candidate would like to invest more time in his life away from the screens and stages. He has other priorities in his “private life” that he wants to devote to.

“The History of Sound” will be shown in cinemas from April 6, 2026. In his latest project “Hamnet” he portrays William Shakespeare. The film deals with the married life between the English poet and his wife Agnes (Jessie Buckley) and the loss of their son Hamnet (Jacobi Jupe).
