A ruthless historical fresco directed by the great Martin Scorsese

Monumental and austere work, Killers of the Flower Moon It’s a massive film which faces one of the most removed genocides in American history by choosing a deliberately disturbing perspective and unspectacular. Martin Scorsese gives up the classic rhythm of the detective genre to build a slow and suffocating tale which forces the viewer to confront the banality of evil. Showing normalized violence and daily but above all integrated into an economic and social system corrupted by greed.

The film also dismantles America’s founding mythrevealing how progress is often built on systemic and reiterated crime, while the direction, controlled and almost glacialseems more interested in collective responsibility than suspense. The duration, never excessive, thus becomes an ethical choice as well as a narrative one: time weighs, expands, becomes an integral part of the political discourse of the filmeven when some sequences are redundant and tiring.

Scorsese then avoids any heroism, removing saving figures from the story and allows a deep moral void to emerge that runs through the entire narrative. Killers of the Flower Moon It thus appears more like an indictment than a classic filman “uncomfortable” work that does not seek entertainment or consensus, but asks for attention and patience. Questioning the viewer on the relationship between history, power and complicity.

The cast of Killers of the Flower Moon: from Leonardo DiCaprio to the revelation Lily Gladstone

In his sixth Scorsese film as a protagonist, Leonardo DiCaprio offers, as usual, an intense performance and convincing. Soon, Leo will return to Martin’s set with the film What Happens at Nightan adaptation of the novel of the same name by Peter Cameron and starring Jennifer Lawrence.

The story moves on the border between psychological and supernatural mystery and follows an American couple who travel to a snowy European country to adopt a child. There she finds herself stuck in a deserted and disturbing hotelpopulated by ambiguous and ambivalent figures.

Co-star of Killers of the Flower Moon another fetish actor of the American director: Robert De Niro. In the role of DiCaprio’s ruthless uncle, De Niro is excellent at give new life to a villain without resorting to clichés but using calm tones of voice, measured gestures and an apparent normality to hide the horror of his actions. Lily Gladstone’s performance was also excellentGolden Globe winner and real emotional heart of the filmcapable of communicating layers of suffering, resistance and dignity with very few words.
