Fireworks, fire and explosions: images show how New Year’s Eve went in our major cities

It was a turbulent New Year’s Eve in the big cities with arson, explosions and vandalism. There were several explosions and fires in Antwerp. The police arrested 101 people, a majority of whom were younger than 20. And young children also set off fireworks in Brussels. In Molenbeek, the police used water cannon to drive back the rioters. 344 police interventions were counted. It remained relatively quiet in Ghent, although young people did gather in the park to throw bombs and shoot flares.
