Norwegian ski jumpers were involved in a cheating scandal last year. Now they blame others – and thus trigger annoyed reactions.
Germany’s ski jumper Karl Geiger reacted angrily to the Norwegian media’s latest allegations of fraud at the Four Hills Tournament. “It’s a bad sign if you’ve cheated yourself and then accuse others of it. That’s not necessarily the best human behavior. That’s just not right,” said Geiger on New Year’s Eve after qualifying for the New Year’s competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Norwegian media had doubted the legality of the binding of Austria’s jumper Manuel Fettner between the first and second competition at the traditional event. The world association Fis reacted to the allegations before the qualification in Garmisch and refuted them: “The binding has been in use for around ten years and has been approved.”
Less than a year ago, Norway’s team caused a suit scandal at the World Cup in Trondheim when they illegally sewed a stiff band into their suit and were caught cheating on an anonymously recorded video. Several athletes, including Marius Lindvik and Johann André Forfang, were subsequently banned, but are now back in the World Cup.
Germany’s top athlete Philipp Raimund also doesn’t believe in the allegations made in the media. “These are all the mind games that are played during the tour. Personally, I think there’s nothing behind it. Personally, I’ve already checked it off – I don’t want to say flushed it down the toilet, but checked it off,” said Raimund.
Veteran Fettner said: “It’s a bit sad when the media doesn’t check it but publishes it directly. It doesn’t bother me because I know that it suits me.”
