Skier Saveli Korosteljov receives instructions from his coach on the ice.
Russian coach Yegor Sorin does not have Tour de Skill accreditation. Jussi Saarinen
Russian skier Saveli Korostelovin22, on the coach With Yegor Sorin40, is not accredited to the Tour de Skill because he does not pass the International Ski Federation’s neutral Russian operator status.
Sorin operates the Tour de Ski in the spectator area. It means that he cannot communicate with his protégé during competitive events.
The Russians circumvent the rule.
– He is always on the phone. I do the warm-ups and the final exercises with ear buds in my ears and I am in contact with him if necessary, says Korosteljov.
A similar operating model was practiced in previous years, for example, in ice hockey up to the World Cup. The suspended coach gave instructions to his team over the phone.
For example, in the SM league and the World Cup, the issue was addressed and the loophole was blocked.
– Of course, it would be easier if Sorin had accreditation. This causes some problems, but I repeat that we can talk over the phone during the competition event, says Korosteljov.
The skier cannot say whether it is possible for Sorin to get the status of a neutral actor.
A few Russian and Belorussian athletes without a country ID are allowed to compete in the Cross-Country World Cup with an exception.
One of the criteria for the exemption is that the athlete does not support Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and is not a member of the Red Army.
English is fine
Saveli Korosteljov has received the AIN status of a neutral Russian athlete. Jussi Saarinen
Born in November 2003 in the city of Perm on the western slope of the Ural Mountains, Korosteljov speaks fluent English.
– My mother is a teacher. He taught me English when I was 5 to 15 years old. After that, I didn’t practice English at all for four years. A couple of years ago, I started traveling for skiing and using the language, says the skier who currently lives in Moscow.
In the middle of an interview with an Italian champion skier Federico Pellegrino pats the Russian on the back in good spirits.
– “Kikkopelle” is my friend, the Russian says.
Money returns
There is no confirmed information about which Russian skiers Korosteljov and Darya Nepryaeva receive funding.
Everyone can figure that out.
Euros are coming back, because Korosteljov has been training in Central Europe since the Davos World Cup held before Christmas.
Even after the Tour de Ski, the man will stay in Central Europe and plans to do high altitude training. Livigno is one possible training destination.
– There would be snow in Hanty-Mansijski, but it is twice as slow as here.
The athlete refers to the fact that the skis do not slip in the freezing temperatures of Siberia. Hanty-Mansiysk is one of Russia’s most significant skiing destinations. Before Vladimir Putin arbitrary war of aggression, biathlon world cup competitions and prestige competitions were organized regularly in the town.
On Wednesday, on stage 3/6 of the Tour de Ski, the Russian was 64th. He bowed out to the winner of the wild mass start, the USA For Gus Schumacher 21.4 seconds.
– I was really bad. The last downhill was like Bambi on slippery ice. I like mass starts and contact races, but I often do something stupid in them – like now.
