Dortmund's Alina Grijseels jumps against VfL Oldenburg in the Bundesliga

As of: December 30, 2025 10:39 p.m

The handball women from Borussia Dortmund continue to rush from victory to victory in the Bundesliga. VfL Oldenburg had a clear success.

Thanks to a strong first half, coach Henk Groener’s team clearly won 34:29 (20:12) in northern Germany on Tuesday evening and remained just behind the top duo HSG Blomberg-Lippe and HSG Bensheim/Auerbach, who, however, played one more game.

BVB had already clearly prevailed against Oldenurg in the quarter-finals of the DHB Cup in November (31:24). In the league, fifth-placed Oldenburg recently inflicted its first defeat of the season on leaders HSG Blomberg-Lippe.

Dortmund dominates the first half

BVB got off to a perfect start and were already leading 3-0 after two and a half minutes. Even after that, Dortmund proved to be accurate, while Oldenburg found it extremely difficult against a strong BVB defense and repeatedly failed at the end of long attacks due to goalkeeper Sarah Wachter. After Kelly Vollebregt’s third goal made it 7-1, VfL coach Niels Bötel took an urgently needed time out.

The measure initially did not help the North Germans. Instead, Dortmund extended their lead to 11:3 (13th). With a 4:1 run, Oldenburg was able to fight back to 11:16 (25th).

BVB, on the other hand, was always successful with a simple method: after winning the ball, a long ball from the strong Alina Grijseels followed to the opposing circle and usually a teammate was free to throw. In the first half this was mainly Vollebregt, who scored five goals before the break. After 30 minutes, Dortmund was clearly leading again with 20:12.

Oldenburg’s comeback is not enough

After the break, Oldenburg tried to play a faster offensive game and were more accurate than before the break. As a result, Dortmund’s lead initially dwindled to five goals (18:23/38.).

The Black and Yellows initially didn’t let VfL get much closer, also because goalkeeper Wachter was always there with strong saves. Up front it was mainly Vollebregt, Emma Olsson and Grijseels who scored the goals. Five minutes before the end, Oldenburg reduced the score to four goals (27:31). But Dortmund didn’t let this bother them and won comfortably in the end with 34:29.

The best goalscorer in the game was Dortmund’s Vollebregt with nine goals. Goalkeeper Wachter ended up making eleven saves.

Top game against Blomberg-Lippe on Saturday
