Half-time conclusion
After a very competitive first 20 minutes, Ulm leads against Würzburg 35:32. In an encounter marked by an enormous number of fouls (26 in total), the referees already had their hands full assessing the physical actions. Due to these many whistles, some of which were justified, the game dragged on and could hardly be found in phases worth seeing. The shooting rates on both sides matched this. While Ulm could hardly show any rhythm with 2/14 from the three-point range, the Lower Franconians hardly did it better from the two-point range with 6/24. The Ulm team dominated the rebound (27:21) and were able to pull away slightly shortly before the end of the half. It will be exciting to see in the second half how the players deal with the fouls. Because numerous players have already committed two or even three personal fouls. Either way, it could be a very long evening in Ulm. The first two sections lasted a total of an hour.

Würzburg’s Marcus Carr, who hasn’t been on the field for some time, is helped into the dressing room by teammates with a heavily bandaged left calf immediately after the siren. It doesn’t look like the American will be able to play again today.

Johnathan Stove is found fairly free on the left by Brae Ivey. Stove doesn’t hesitate for long with the leather and pushes the ball through the net from the outside. These are very important points for the Baskets in a not so easy phase.

Now it is the hosts who are setting the tone again. First Jensen hits the three-pointer, followed by Smith’s layup with a foul. The following free throw doesn’t hit, but the arena gets a little louder for the first time in the evening.

After a long time, a team can pull away again. And it is the Baskets who can take a three-point lead thanks to Stove. But then comes the Coaches Challenge from Ty Harrelson, who claims to have seen Stove make a clear offensive foul against Milicic before his lay-up. The referees check the scene on the screen and agree with the Ulm coach.

The free throws still determine this game. The referees have already awarded 30 free throws. In many actions, however, the referees were correct when they whistled. However, this doesn’t provide much flow and drags the game out enormously.

The threesome doesn’t really want to fall at Ulm today. The home team from downtown have already started ten attempts, with only one successful goal. On the other hand, Würzburg is slightly better with 2/6. From the two-point range, however, the Baskets look very weak at 5/19.

7:10 p.m

When you look at the statistics, you notice a lot of personal fouls. Simon already has three fouls for the home side, while Jensen and Anigbata also have two fouls. On the other side, Edigin already has three, and Thompson and Muenkat have two each. In total, both teams received nine fouls each.

7:08 p.m
11:25 p.m
The hosts are currently working significantly better on the boards than the Lower Franconians. Overall, Ulm grabbed 18 rebounds, five more than Würzburg. However, the seven ball losses (three at Würzburg) are currently problematic for the Swabians.

7:06 p.m

Herzog bravely goes into the zone against Simon and is slightly pushed when attempting to throw, which the referees punish with two free throws for the German. From the line, Herzog scores another two points for the Baskets.

7:04 p.m

Pjanic misses a pretty easy one-on-zero layup, which Osborne ultimately punishes with the rebound. But the ball then lands at Würzburg’s Herzog, who scores ice-coldly from the corner to take the lead.

The first moments in the second quarter weren’t marked by many points either. The litters are misplaced, sometimes just barely. You can’t see much of the Ulm flow that was visible at the start of the game.

Quarter conclusion
After the first ten minutes the score between Ulm and Würzburg is 17:17. Ulm started the game a little better and quickly led 8-1. Würzburg needed a few minutes to get the plays going. With lots of free throws, the Franconians gradually crawled their way into the game and acted more and more on an equal footing. As the game progressed, the actions became more physical and competitive, which didn’t exactly help with the game’s progress. Many fouls often stop the game and delay the action. Shortly before the end of the quarter, the Baskets briefly took the lead through Thompson before Smith equalized again from the free throw line.

18:53

So far, the Würzburgers have only managed three baskets from the field. There are also eight points from free throws. There is still a lot of room for improvement in this very competitive encounter.
8.
18:51
16:14
The encounter will be very physical in many actions, which the referees around Robert Lottermoser will let pass. However, the decisions often go against the home team, which encourages the audience to loudly express their displeasure.

6:47 p.m
4:10 p.m
At the moment, many minor fouls are not ensuring that the game is going particularly smoothly. Every now and then, however, sporting highlights can be seen, such as Sengfelder’s lay-up after a great pass from Ledlum.
6.
18:44
10:8
There are already six fouls in the home team’s statistics, while the Lower Franconians had to resort to the foul first. In addition, the Swabians foul extremely often when Würzburg tries to throw, which is why they have already been allowed to go to the free throw line eight times.

18:42

The Baskets are now getting into the game a little better and are managing to defend the Ulm team. On offense, Mintz scored another two points from the free throw line. So far, Würzburg have only been able to get their four points from there.

6:39 p.m

Stove can score for the guests for the first time from the free throw line. But on the other side, Ledlum successfully hits a difficult jump shot, which was well defended by Edigin, with Brett.

6:36 p.m
6-0
Würzburg finds it extremely difficult to get into their systems in the first few minutes. The previous three finishes are each too short and the balls are given away far too easily.

The Ulm team are getting into the game well! Counters are also scored in the second attack. Because Jensen finds Simon pretty free in the right corner, although the forward doesn’t have to be asked twice. The American hits the three-point shot ice cold.

6:33 p.m

In front of a sold-out crowd, the guests got their first possession of the ball through Mintz, but Carr immediately lost it again because he was just out of bounds. On the other hand, the home team can score their first points of the evening thanks to Anigbata’s layup.
18:29
Starting Fives
For Ulm, head coach Ty Harrelson sends the following five players onto the floor at the start: Jensen, Osborne, Smith, Simon and Anigbata. With Weidemann and Klepeisz, the Swabians are missing two guards. On the other side, the Lower Franconians start, as usual, with Carr, Mintz, Skladanowski, Stove and Edigin.
6:18 p.m
Würzburg’s first hundred of the season
The Baskets from Würzburg are currently greeting us from second place in the table. Thanks to the clear 102:83 against newly promoted Trier, the Lower Franconians jumped behind FC Bayern in the BBL table. Guard Marcus Carr scored 22 points, although none of his five shots were made from three-point range. Carr also dished out six assists for his paint. Most recently, coach Sašo Filipovski’s team won five competitive games in a row. Things also went well for Würzburg in the Basketball Champions League. They finished the group phase in second place, which means they have to qualify against the Slovakian Levice at the beginning of January in order to qualify for the next round.
18:13
Strong Ulm throwing rate in Bamberg
The Swabians recently won in Bamberg with 106:83 and thus achieved their seventh win of the season. The success in Upper Franconia was boosted by strong ratings from Downtown. In the end there were 17 successful three-pointers in Ulm’s box score. In particular, the two guards Mark Smith and Tobias Jensen gave the baskets a total of 11 long-distance throws (shooting rate of 91.7%). Eleven steals helped the runner-up win on the road.
6:08 p.m
Which winning streak lasts?
Both teams currently have the second-best winning streaks behind FC Bayern Munich (eight wins). Both Ulm and Lower Franconia managed to win the last four BBL games. Today’s guests were able to win by an average of 16.8 points. Can this be achieved today with the equally strong team from Ulm?
18:02
A duel with classic character
In the past two seasons, the two teams have had one or two highly dramatic encounters in the playoffs. In the previous season, Ulm beat the Baskets 3-2 in a very competitive semi-final series. In this case, each team was able to win their respective home game, which ultimately suited the Ulm team. It was revenge for the Donaustadt team’s early elimination the year before, when Würzburg surprisingly knocked the then reigning champions out of the competition in the quarter-finals. There will certainly be a lot of fire in this duel on matchday 13 today, as both teams want to stay in the top third of the league.
