Since 2004 Arctic Circle express train -film has enchanted both children and adults every Christmas, and it is considered one of the classic Christmas films.
The film is based on Chris Van Allsburg’s novel of the same name, published in 1985, which later became a bestseller.
However, the author wasn’t sure if the story could ever make it to the big screen, as he didn’t imagine that animation could create believable human characters, and he didn’t want to turn the film into a live-action film.
In 2001, actor Tom Hanks approached Van Allsburg about acquiring the film rights to the book, and this changed the author’s mind. According to Van Allsburg, the film finally managed to “bring the book to life”.
According to the author, the book was brought to life with the film. PDO
How did this work out?
Director Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks used performance capture technology in the making of the film, which at the time was a much less well-known method than traditional motion capture.
Motion capture is a technique used to capture and convert the movements of a moving object into a digital format. Captured motion data is used to move digital characters and objects.
While motion capture mainly records the body movements of the actor, performance capture records the entire performance. It is a more advanced method that, in addition to the body, records facial expressions, eye movements and voice, enabling a fuller and more expressive character. It is also able to capture subtle nuances that are often missed in traditional motion capture.
During the production of the film, Hanks’ entire body, including his face, was covered with up to 150 sensors so that his movements and expressions could be precisely recorded and transferred to the characters in the film. Traditional motion capture, on the other hand, cannot capture facial expressions in as much detail.
– I didn’t want the film to look like cartoons, Zemeckis said Wiredin an interview with the magazine in 2004.
In the same interview, he stated that a fully staged version of the film would not have been practical or workable: it would have looked bad and would have been extremely expensive in terms of production costs, he said.
Zemeckis also emphasized that the goal was not to make completely photorealistic CGI animation either, but to achieve a style that would be somewhere between a screenplay and computer animation, which would combine the strengths of both.
With Performance Capture technology, it is possible to accurately capture the gestures of the actor. PDO
Six different characters
Hanks played a total of six different characters in the film. He played three main adult characters: the conductor, the tramp and Santa Claus. In addition to these, he also played the hero, the hero’s father and the zither.
Daryl Sabara Daryl Sabara voices the hero in the film, but the child character’s expressions and movements are based on Hanks’ performance.
In addition to acting, Hanks served as the film’s narrator.
Hanks said in his interview For IGN in 2004 that Zemeckis originally wanted her to play every character in the film. However, there was so much to do that in the end Hanks ended up with “only” six roles in the film.
According to Hanks, portraying several different characters in the same film was made easier by the fact that the characters were clearly distinct from each other.
Director Robert Zemeckis later used performance capture technology in the 2007 release Beowulfin the movie as well Saituri’s Christmas in the movie (2009).
Director James Cameron has famously used the same technology extensively Avatarin his film series. Hanks and Zemeckis also used the technique in Hanks and by Robin Wright for rejuvenation in 2024 when it premiered Here-in the movie.
In the film, Tom Hanks plays, among other things, Santa Claus, a hero and a conductor. PDO
