As a Champions League participant, Newcastle went into the season with great expectations. But just before the turn of the year, the club is stuck in midfield.

Newcastle United lost the top game on “Boxing Day” in the Premier League against Manchester United. The “Magpies” around national players Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw lost 1-0 in Manchester. The decisive goal came in the 24th minute. United’s Patrick Dorgu took courage after a throw-in was blocked – and hammered the ball into the net.

Newcastle’s attack around Nick Woltemade ran and put pressure on them – but rarely had any chances. Most of the deals remained without great danger. The visitors’ best opportunity in the first half came from Bruno Guimarães’ header after a corner in the twelfth minute. On the other hand, Matheus Cunha had the opportunity to make it 2-0. But the ex-Herthan player shot just wide of the goal (36′).

In the second half the game became even more one-sided as Manchester increasingly retreated due to their lead. Newcastle’s Lewis Hall finished in the 62nd minute, but only hit the crossbar from just over 20 meters – a sigh of relief for Manchester United.

Things got a little restless 120 seconds later. After a corner for Newcastle, defender Fabian Schär shot the ball into the hand of Manchester captain Lisandro Martínez. However, the referee’s whistle remained silent and the video assistant was also fine with the decision after checking.

Particularly noticeable was England international Anthony Gordon, who tried several times but failed in both the 67th and 85th minutes. Nick Woltemade was substituted in the 68th minute.

The defeat leaves Newcastle at best eleventh in the table, while Man United jumps to fifth place for at least one night.
