The Eisbären Berlin suffered their fourth defeat in a row in the German Ice Hockey League.

The Eisbären Berlin suffered their fourth defeat in a row in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) against the Grizzlys Wolfsburg. On Friday evening, the German champions lost to Wolfsburg 1:2 (1:1, 0:1, 0:0).

Liam Kirk had given the Eisbären a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, but around three minutes later the guests were able to equalize through Spencer Machacek (15th minute), and Justin Feser scored the decisive goal to make it 1-2 in the second third (34th minute).

Eisbär’s mistakes bring Wolfsburg into the game

In front of 14,200 fans in the arena at Ostbahnhof, both teams initially concentrated on defense. There were few chances to score. A successful run by Liam Kirk, who was played by Leo Pföderl in front of the goal, resulted in Berlin’s opening goal.

Overall, coach Serge Aubin’s team often acted too harmlessly in attack in this game and also made a few mistakes in defense. One of them enabled Wolfsburg’s equalizer through Machacek, in which, to make matters worse, Eisbären goalkeeper Jake Hildebrandt was cleared by his own man.

The Berliners started the second third erratically. After an early shot from the crossbar by Wolfsburg and a save by goalkeeper Jake Hildebrandt, it was the Berliners who hit the goal first. However, the goal that supposedly took the lead again didn’t count. Shortly afterwards, the Berliners lost the puck on offense, Justin Feser converted the one-man counterattack into Wolfsburg’s lead.

Almost balanced balance for the season Losing streak

In the third third, the Berliners were unable to generate any real pressure again. The guests defended their lead until the end and inflicted the next defeat on the Eisbären.

The German champions are still not really getting going this season. With an almost even balance of 17 wins (two of them after overtime) to 15 defeats (one of them in a penalty shootout), the Eisbären are currently in sixth place in the DEL table.

Before the turn of the year, the Berliners have to compete in the league twice – on Sunday at home against the Nuremberg Ice Tigers and on Tuesday at the Pinguins in Bremerhaven.
