Million dollar perfect: The Scottish professional cyclist Oscar Onley is moving to the British racing team Ineos Grenadiers at the beginning of the new year – and costs a high transfer fee.

The 23-year-old, Florian Lipowitz’s summer rival for a podium place at the Tour de France, is leaving his previous team Picnic PostNL early despite a contract that runs until 2027.

“I’m very proud to be joining the Grenadiers on a long-term contract and it makes the prospect of riding for a British team when the 2027 Tour de France starts in Scotland even more exciting,” Onley wrote on Instagram.

Onley established himself as a tour driver last season and finished fourth overall behind Lipowitz in the Tour of France.

Due to the lack of an exit clause, a high transfer fee is due for the transfer; according to media reports, this is in the mid-single-digit million range.

“The way he drives and understands a race is very mature for his age – he’s a real racer. I can’t wait to work with him – at his age he still has a lot of potential,” said Ineos racing director Geraint Thomas.
