SC Magdeburg narrowly missed out on victory in the last home game of the year. In the duel against record champions Kiel, the league leaders had to be content with a draw for the first time after 23 competitive wins. THW keeper Wolf particularly shone.

SC Magdeburg’s uncanny winning streak is broken: the Champions League winner has lost ground again with a 26:26 (13:13) against “feared opponent” THW Kiel after 23 competitive game wins in a row. With 34:2 points, the leaders in the handball Bundesliga are still heading towards the championship title. In the previous 30 Bundesliga games, Magdeburg had celebrated 29 wins and only dropped a point in the draw in Erlangen on September 20th. The last time the SCM failed to win a competitive game was the defeat against HC Veszprem at the Club World Cup on September 30th.

Exchange of blows until the break

In the catch-up game on matchday six, the guests had to do without Elias Ellefsen a Skipagotu, who stayed in Kiel with a shoulder injury. In front of 6,600 spectators, Magdeburg had to adapt to a different attacking game from the THW, but despite having the lead in their own offensive they had problems (4:3/10.). The SCM failed to increase their lead several times and failed several times due to Andreas Wolff (15 saves in total) in the visitors’ goal, which Kiel used to turn the game around (7:8/18th). The game remained close until the break, so the draw was the logical consequence.

SCM pulls away – Kiel comes back

After the restart, the SCM missed the first two attacks, Kiel briefly led with two goals (13:15/33.). This was followed by a 7-1 run by Magdeburg, which gave the hosts the lead by three goals for the first time ever (20:16/41.). However, Kiel recovered and equalized once again (20:20/46.). Neither team was able to maintain control of the game for any length of time. In the final minute, Sergey Hernandez saved, but Kiel’s Hendrik Pekeler used the rebound to equalize – and Magdeburg didn’t score again in the remaining two seconds. The best Magdeburg shooters were Lukas Mertens and Gisli Kristjansson with six goals each.

Petterson remains loyal to SCM

Before the game, Magdeburg announced the extension of the contract with Swedish national player Daniel Pettersson for another year. The 33-year-old has been playing for Magdeburg since the 2016/2017 season. “Daniel is a player who is good for every team. You can rely on him athletically – and personally anyway,” said SCM coach Bennet Wiegert about the extension, while Pettersson emphasized: “Our fans are unique and always there for us. I’m looking forward to continuing to hunt for the title with this fantastic team.”
