Traditional sewerage is not possible everywhere. Especially in rural areas, houses are sometimes too far apart, making work very expensive. Flanders is now investing in decentralized purification: small-scale, innovative systems that purify water on site.
Six municipalities are starting a pilot project. “We will then roll out what works there throughout Flanders,” says Minister Brouns. This concerns Poperinge, Ledegem, Wevelgem, Zwevegem in West Flanders, Ghent in East Flanders and Wuustwezel in Antwerp.
