Shock for Liverpool FC: The English football champions have to do without record purchase Alexander Isak for a long time. As the Reds announced on Monday, the striker suffered a broken ankle in the 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur and has already undergone surgery.
The club did not provide any information about the exact duration of the outage, but English media assume it will be several months.
“Following the diagnosis, an operation was carried out today due to the ankle injury, which also includes a fibular fracture,” the club announced on Monday evening.
Record transfer Isak, who came from Newcastle United in the summer for 150 million euros, has so far fallen short of expectations and has only scored two league goals – including the opening goal in London on Saturday.
Just as the goal was being scored, the 26-year-old Swede was injured in a duel and had to be substituted in the 15th minute of the game.
For Liverpool it is another hard blow in an already difficult time: the champions are currently only in fifth place, ten points behind leaders Arsenal FC.
Coach Arne Slot’s team has already suffered six defeats – and the longed-for liberation against Tottenham is now overshadowed by Isak’s injury.
