The stock markets in East Asia showed some strong increases on Monday, continuing the positive trend from Friday.
The surcharges are primarily driven by a strong recovery in technology and chip stocks. The price gains were particularly significant for the technology-heavy Kospi in Seoul at 1.8 percent. For the Nikkei-225 in Tokyo it even went up by 1.9 percent. Here too, the profits of technology stocks are driving the trend. On the other hand, the gains are more moderate in Shanghai (+0.7%) and Hong Kong (+0.1%)
The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) has left its benchmark bank lending rate (LPR) to companies and households unchanged. As the country’s central bank announced, the one-year reference interest rate (Loan Prime Rate – LPR) will remain at 3.0 percent and the five-year LPR will remain at 3.5 percent. The Loan Prime Rate is one of the PBoC’s key interest rates.
Markets had largely expected the decision as Beijing is on track to meet its annual growth target. The central bank signaled earlier this month that it may cut interest rates in 2026 as part of efforts to stabilize economic growth and raise consumer prices.
It is said that concerns about an AI bubble are currently taking a back seat and are therefore driving the tech sector. Demand associated with AI and data centers is expected to remain robust. Morgan Stanley described Micron’s quarterly figures published last week as the best in the history of the US semiconductor industry outside of Nvidia. Micron had also significantly increased its profit forecast. The company is virtually sold out for all of 2026.
Among the individual stocks in Tokyo, SoftBank gained 4.85 percent, Advantest rose by 4.51 percent. In Seoul, the shares of the two index heavyweights Samsung Electronics and SK hynix rose by 3.3 and 5.7 percent, respectively.
