World champion honored
National basketball team is “Team of the Year”

After winning the World Cup, the German national basketball team also secured the European Championship this year. They have now been honored for this.
The German basketball players are the team of the year 2025. The European champion team, led by captain Dennis Schröder, secured the award in the sports journalists’ election, like two years ago. For the first time since 1993, the basketball players became European champions in Riga in September. In 2023, Schröder and Co. won World Cup gold completely unexpectedly and for the first time.
With 2,638 points, the basketball players were well ahead of the competition at the ceremonial award in the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden. Second place went to the men’s national hockey team, which triumphed at the home European Championships in Mönchengladbach and scored 1,367 points. The broadcast of the gala had to be interrupted for ten minutes because the basketball players arrived late.
After winning bronze at the World Championships in Tokyo, the women’s 4×100 meter relay team led by Gina Lückekemper once again came in third (1,051 points). The top five places were completed by the Nordic Combined World Cup gold team (800) and the women’s national soccer team (517). Coach Christian Wück’s team was eliminated in the semi-finals of the European Championships.
Decathlon world champion Leo Neugebauer and biathlete Franziska Preuß had previously been named Germany’s athlete of the year.
