RB Leipzig’s sports director Marcel Schäfer suggested that ex-national striker Timo Werner make a change in the winter given his reserve role. “He has always behaved professionally and correctly. Despite all this, I believe that if he wants more playing time and we have discussed this with him in detail, perhaps it is time to change,” said Schäfer after the 1:3 against former champions Bayer Leverkusen on the TV channel “Sky”.

But this is solely the decision of Werner, who still has a well-paid contract until the end of the season. “Should he make the decision to stay here, we will continue to work with him as normal. As we have done so far, because we respect contracts,” added Schäfer.
Werner was brought into the Leipzig squad in the last game of the year due to the personnel shortages and was even substituted on in the final phase. The club’s record goalscorer remains very popular with fans; the 29-year-old was celebrated with shouts of “Timo Werner”. According to media reports, the San José Earthquakes from the North American league MLS are said to have signaled interest in a commitment.
