After years, there will be another duel between HSV and Eintracht Frankfurt: both teams will meet for the first time since 2018. The last duel had consequences.

There is a lot of tradition in this encounter: The Hamburger SV meets Eintracht Frankfurt for the 109th time on Saturday (3:30 p.m., you can watch it live here). Historically, the numbers speak for the people of Hamburg. So far they have won 44 competitive games, the SGE 39, and 25 games ended in a draw. He celebrated in the Bundesliga HSV 30 wins against the “Adlerträger” in their own stadium alone.

Some duels made history – for better or worse. In 2018, a defeat in Frankfurt finally paved HSV’s way into the 2nd Bundesliga. In 2009, the “Rothosen” celebrated a big European Cup party on the Main. The Hamburg editorial team at t-online looks back at selected games.

Frankfurt, May 23, 2009: In the late 2000s, it was not Eintracht Frankfurt that was one of the top teams in the Bundesliga, but rather HSV. Hamburg played for the championship for a long time in the spring of 2009 before they ran out of steam. Nevertheless, direct qualification for the European Cup was still possible on the last match day.

Prerequisite: HSV had to get more points than BVB, who had the same number of points. Dortmund couldn’t get past a 1-1 draw in Mönchengladbach – a win would be enough for Hamburg. It looked like this for a long time. David Jarolim and Ivica Olic gave the team a 2-0 lead. But Frankfurt struck back, the equalizer came less than two minutes after the goal.

HSV almost lost their lucrative participation in the European Cup. But in the 90th +1 minute, Piotr Trochowski took courage and scored from a tight angle to make it 3-2. Final whistle, cheers, fifth place. One flaw remained: Trochowski was offside when he scored the winning goal. With a video referee, the goal would probably not have counted.

Hamburg, January 21, 2011: On matchday 19, two direct competitors met in the race for Europe. HSV went into the duel in seventh place, Frankfurt in eighth. Around 50,000 spectators in the Volksparkstadion saw a hard-fought game.

Mladen Petric decided the game after 65 minutes with a left-footed shot. The 1-0 was also the final score – and to date the last HSV win against the Hessians. At the end of the season, both teams missed Europe. HSV came eighth, Eintracht Frankfurt rose together with them FC St Pauli to the 2nd Bundesliga.
