Erik Vandewalle, driving force behind the tile pan project: “The idea was: find out who performed here in that casino? With the Baccara cup and Margriet Mermans. She always took pans with her and when she came across singers, they signed them.”
Signatures but also works of art
Well-known cartoonists and athletes also tackled a tile. Some simply signed it, others turned it into a real work of art. Such as a 3D creation by visual artist Hannes D’ Haese. “The bird represents freedom. It can fly. We are usually stuck with a pile of bricks for the rest of our lives.”
The old Normandy-style casino contained more than 300,000 tiles. One thousandth of that is now waiting for a buyer. The unique collection will go under the auction hammer next Saturday, September 27. All proceeds go towards the operation of the MUG helicopter.
