The Public Prosecution Service (OM) will prosecute a police officer for the death of a detainee who was held in a cell complex in Arnhem this summer. The detainee died after he was given the wrong medication due to a mistake. The Public Prosecution Service announces today to prosecute the officer who provided the medication for culpable homicide.

On June 8, 2025, a detainee became unwell after taking medication. He was rushed to hospital, where he died three days later. An expert determined that the incorrectly administered medication was the cause of death. Research by the National Criminal Investigation Department now shows that the police officer who provided the medication could have known that it was not intended for the detainee.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the officer did not do enough to verify whether he gave the medication to the right person. Two other police officers who played a role in the distribution of medication on the day in question will not be prosecuted. The Public Prosecution Service has not been able to establish that the actions they performed materially contributed to the cause of the detainee’s death.

Due to the privacy of those involved, no further details will be shared until the case is heard in court. It is not yet known when this treatment will take place.
