The medical examiner’s office confirms stab wounds as the cause of death for Rob and Michele Reiner. Son Nick Reiner is charged with two counts of murder.

Following the arrest of Nick Reiner in connection with the deaths of his parents Rob and Michele Reiner, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office has announced the official cause of death. As several US media outlets consistently report, both died from stab wounds. According to the coroner’s office, Rob and Michele Reiner died from multiple injuries caused by violence with a sharp object. In both cases these are clearly homicides. Further details about the exact course of the crime or the weapon used have not yet been published.

Body found in Brentwood and son arrested

Police found Rob Reiner and his wife Michele dead in their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles on Sunday, December 14th. The bodies were discovered by the daughter Romy Reiner. She informed the police and stated directly that her brother lived with their parents, was considered potentially dangerous and should therefore be considered as a suspect. After the bodies were found, her 32-year-old son Nick Reiner was arrested in Exposition Park near the University of Southern California. According to the authorities, the arrest took place without resistance.

Double murder charge and first court hearing

Prosecutors filed two counts of murder against Nick Reiner, who is currently in custody. If convicted, he could face life in prison and possibly the death penalty. However, enforcement of this appears unlikely due to the moratorium in force in the state of California since 2019. The 32-year-old appeared in court for the first time on December 17th. He did not comment on the allegations. His lawyer Alan Jackson said it was “too early” to make a statement on the question of guilt or innocence. The next court date was set for January 7th. Jackson spoke of complex legal and factual challenges in the proceedings and called on the media and public to exercise restraint in evaluating the case.

Defense attorneys with prominent mandates

Nick Reiner’s attorney Alan Jackson is considered one of the most well-known criminal defense lawyers in Los Angeles. In the past, Jackson has defended former film producer Harvey Weinstein and actor Kevin Spacey, among others. Most recently, in June 2025, he secured the acquittal of Karen Read, who had been charged with second-degree murder and the manslaughter of her husband. A former U.S. Air Force officer, Jackson teaches at Pepperdine and Loyola law schools and regularly appears as a legal expert on U.S. news programs. The lawyer is regularly criticized for his “broken system” narrative and his aggressive litigation. On his website he promises a 96 percent success rate.

Evidence of family conflicts

Media reports indicate tensions within the family. Sources confirmed to Rolling Stone that Nick Reiner was noticed for his unpleasant behavior at talk show host Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party. “TMZ” had previously reported that there was a loud argument between Nick Reiner and his father Rob Reiner, after which Rob and Michele Reiner left the event. In addition, several media outlets reported that the relationship between Nick Reiner and his parents had been difficult for years and was burdened by his addiction problems. There was a temporary rapprochement through working together on the film “Being Charlie”.

Statement from the siblings

Jake and Romy Reiner commented on the death of their parents in a joint statement. The loss was serious and hard to put into words, they said. “They weren’t just our parents, they were our best friends.” Just two weeks ago, Romy Reiner shared pictures from a vacation together on Instagram with the words: “Grateful for family.”
