A war museum will be built in the buildings of the former municipal yard in Havelte. Visitors will soon be able to learn everything about the war heritage in the municipality of Westerveld.
The Havelte WWII Airport Museum Foundation had been looking for a location for a long time. This has now been achieved with a financial contribution from the Zwolle Region Deal and cooperation from the municipality.
With a temporary environmental permit, the museum has five years to demonstrate that it is (financially) feasible and feasible.
The municipal council’s vision on recreation and tourism states, among other things, that it wants to offer more daytime recreation. The plans for the museum fit in well with this. Councilor Alfred Schoenmaker calls it a valuable addition to the list of museums in the municipality.
Schoenmaker: “With the arrival of the war museum, the history that took place in Havelte and on the Holtingerveld is made accessible, visible and experienceable, at least temporarily. The events of the Second World War and the lessons we can learn from them are extremely valuable to share in a museum with a wide audience.”
The former municipal yard is still used as a temporary fire station for the Havelter fire brigade. When the new barracks are completed in the second quarter of 2026, the museum can take up residence in the buildings.
