Marco Borsato spent a week intimately entwined with his ex Leontine Ruiters on the supermarket shelves: the Story gave him a major image boost. “She called paparazzo!”

It made quite a difference: the cover of last week’s Story. After the acquittal of Marco Borsato, Edwin Smulders, the magazine’s paparazzo, made an entire photo report of him in the driveway of his ex Leontine Ruiters. We see the two intimately entwined looking straight into the camera. So they were very aware of his presence.

Handshake

According to the gossip boys and girls of NU.nl, it is evident that Marco has had a dispute with Edwin about this, but editor-in-chief Guido den Aantrekker relegates this to the realm of fables. In fact, he is quite pissed off about this conclusion from his colleagues at DPG Media.

Evert Santegoeds, the editor-in-chief of competitor Privé, has a lot of knowledge when it comes to paparazzi and deals with celebrities and thinks that the problem is different. According to him, it was not Marco who shook hands with Edwin, but it was Leontine Ruiters who informed the Smulders family.

Theories

That cover shoot indeed suited Marco well, according to Evert. “He didn’t know how quickly he had to go to her once the judge’s decision had been made. There are whole theories about PR agencies being involved to advise him to do so. Well, I think it’s much simpler,” he says in the podcast Strictly Private.

What about according to Evert? “Edwin Smulders’ wife (Anouk Smulders, ed.) is very good friends with Leontine, so she must have said: ‘He will come here after the hearing.’ I assume Anouk Smulders tells her husband that, right? There are no complete scenarios behind it. That’s just how it happened, I’m telling you.”

Leave it for a moment

Isn’t Evert jealous that Story did have these images of Marco and Leontine, and his own paparazzo was doing other things? “Yes, we left it for a while when we were done in Utrecht.”

In any case, the images are not very authentic, concludes the Private Boss. He thinks the photos are very posed. “Yes, I think so too. If it was supposed to be paparazzi work, it didn’t quite work out.”
