Update in the Süper Lig

Leroy Sané is one of the big stars in Turkish football – and one of the losers in the market value update of the Süper Lig. The German national player lost 2 million euros in his valuation, as did his prominent teammates Davinson Sánchez and Mauro Icardi. And at Fenerbahce, the star ensemble Jhon Durán, Kerem Aktürkoğlu and Ederson also lost millions. The bottom line is that there is a big minus in the squad value for both top clubs. The betting scandal in Turkish football also has an impact.

“Although Leroy Sané is in a very good phase, his age should not be ignored,” explains Sinan Yener from Transfermarkt in Turkey. Sané needed a little time to warm up in Istanbul after leaving Bayern, but he has been delivering consistently for a long time. Three goals and two assists came in the last three league games alone. Yener says: “Despite his top form and return to the national team, his market value has fallen. The 29-year-old’s age was a decisive factor.” The devaluation of 2 million euros is only a small loss of 8 percent. As of now, Sané is listed at 23 million euros. It is his sixth loss in a row. Just a year and a half ago in Munich, the Essen native was valued at 70 million euros.

At Galatasaray, Sané’s former national team colleague İlkay Gündoğan (-0.5 to 3.5) is also one of the professionals for whom age affects the market value. As with the 35-year-old Gündoğan, so too with the 31-year-old Abdülkerim Bardakcı (-0.5 to 6.5 million), among 32 year olds Mario Lemina (-1 to 6) and Icardi (-2 to 6) as well as among 29 year olds Lucas Torreira (-1 to 12) and Sánchez (-2 to 18). “These players are distinguished by their performance. However, due to their advanced age, they have lost value,” explains expert Yener.

There is a positive trend in the Gala squad with 25-year-old Yunus Akgün (+2 to 17), 22-year-old Kazımcan Karataş (+1 to 2) and 18-year-old Arda Ünyay (+0.5 to 1). At least the stars Victor Osimhen and Wilfried Singo were able to maintain their old value. Yener explained: “Osimhen and Singo maintained their market value due to their potential and the possibility of high-profile transfers. Osimhen’s market value remains stable at 75 million euros, while Singo’s market value remains at 28 million euros.” Galatasaray’s squad value fell from 305 million to 290 million euros – slightly less than city rivals Fenerbahce.

Millions in losses at Fenerbahce

At Fener, the squad value goes down from 292 million euros to 270 million euros. A symbol of this: the 22-year-old striker Durán, whose valuation drops from 35 million to 32 million euros. “Durán has not yet been able to fulfill the expected performance at Fenerbahçe,” says Yener, assessing the Colombian’s situation. “His lack of consistency, the many missed games and his frequent appearances as a substitute have prevented him from showing stable performances. His young age and potential prevent an even greater loss of value.”

There are further devaluations at Fenerbahçe for Sebastian Szymanski (-2 to 12), Kerem Aktürkoğlu (-1 to 22), Youssef En-Nesyri (-2 to 22) and Marco Asensio (-2 to 15). The market value of the latter fell from 17 million to 15 million euros. “In Asensio’s case, his lack of appearances in the national team and his age were taken into account,” says Yener about the 29-year-old ex-Madrilenian. Despite his good performance, his value fell due to his advanced age.” The devaluations for ex-Man City goalkeeper Ederson (-3 to 15), Talisca (-1 to 7), Fred (-2 to 7) and Milan Škriniar (-1 to 11) are also justified by the age of the players.

In addition to further devaluations for Edson Álvarez (-2 to 22), Rodrigo Becão (-1.5 to 3) and İrfan Can Kahveci (-1.5 to 4.5), there is also positive news from the Yellow Canaries: The market values of İsmail Yüksek (+2 to 13), Levent Mercan (+1.3 to 3.5), Dorgeles Nene (+1 to 1.8), Yiğit Efe Demir (+0.5 to 2) and Tarık Çetin (+0.3 to 0.6) increase.

Biggest winner and loser at Trabzonspor

The biggest winner of the update can be found in the ranks of Trabzonspor: Christ Inao Oulaï increased his market value from 4 million to 8 million euros. “His performances in the national team and at Trabzonspor have a significant impact on his market value,” emphasizes Yener. The expert adds about the 19-year-old Bordo Mavililer midfielder: “He definitely has a profile with development potential. Oulaï’s market value increased from 600,000 euros to 8 million euros in just a few weeks due to his performances in the last two updates.”

However, the biggest loser of the update can also be found in Trabzon: André Onana, who came on loan from Manchester United in the summer. “As with Ederson, Onana’s age was not insignificant in the new evaluation,” says Yener about the 29-year-old. “In addition, his absence in European competitions contributed to the loss of value. His performances in the league were good. However, it can be assumed that he will not be in the squad of parent club Manchester United next season. Instead, a move on terms is conceivable that is unlikely to be appropriate to his previous market value.” Onana falls from 20 million to just 15 million euros (all new Süper Lig market values at a glance).

Betting scandal in Turkey: market values temporarily removed

Transfermarkt in Turkey has also temporarily removed the market values of the players involved in the current betting scandal. Those affected include Metehan Baltacı from Galatasaray, who was banned for nine months, and who was taken out of the game for the same amount of time Yusuf Ozdemir from Alanyaspor. Once the penalties have been served and the players have returned to the pitch, their market values are recalculated (the penalties of the Süper Lig professionals in the betting scandal).

This is how transfer market market values work

The transfer market market values are created taking into account various pricing models as well as a strong involvement of the transfer market community, which deals with the values in detailed discussions. The transfer market market values cannot generally be equated with the transfer fees actually paid.

The goal is not to predict a price, but rather an expected value. When determining the market value, both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant to a certain extent. Examples of this are listed here. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (for detailed market value definition).
