Despite a strong comeback, Max World Champion was dethroned as Formula 1 World Champion. This results in an important change for the Red Bull driver.
In recent years the matter has been clear: Max Verstappen started as the reigning Formula 1 world champion with starting number 1. This possibility is guaranteed in the rules of the premier motorsport class.
After four years of titles, Verstappen has now been beaten by Lando Norris. The Brit has already announced that he will start with number 1 in 2026.

In the F1 years up to 2021, the Dutchman opted for the 33. Around the GP in Las Vegas, Verstappen explained that 3 was actually his favorite number and that he would choose it.
Now there are many indications that it will really be the 3. Pictures from his GT3 test in the Mercedes in Estoril show his name with the corresponding number 3 above his garage.

The FIA will publish the official starting list for 2026 on December 20th, at the latest by then the new number will be official.
Why hasn’t Verstappen driven with the 3 yet? When Verstappen came to the premier motorsport class in 2015, number 3 was already occupied by Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian is no longer driving in Formula 1, but he is entitled to the number for two years after leaving F1.

The change also requires permission from the motorsport association FIA. This is said to have happened by now, according to “GPblog”.
Verstappen shared a curious anecdote surrounding the number debate. “I actually wanted 69, but my father said, ‘That’s not a good idea.’ But the number always looks the same, no matter what angle! 69 would be very good for photos and marketing and also for caps. No matter how you wear it, it always remains 69. In that respect, it would be a good marketing tool.”
