FIFA has named the World Player of the Year for 2025. Once again, the choice fell on a player from FC Barcelona.
Aitana Bonmatí can call herself World Player of the Year 2025. The FC Barcelona player was announced as the winner of the election on Tuesday evening in the Qatari capital Doha. However, due to her injury, she was unable to accept the trophy on site. The 27-year-old suffered a broken fibula in November.
For Bonmatí it was the third award in a row. She had already won the trophy in 2023 and 2024. National coaches, selection captains, football journalists and fans took part in the FIFA election via the official FIFA homepage. Bonmatí was also recently honored three times in a row with the Ballon d’Or, the award for world footballer given by the French magazine “France Football”.
In the summer, Bonmatí and the Spanish national team only failed on penalties against the English selection in the European Championship final. The midfielder had previously played a key role in reaching the final. She scored the decisive 1-0 winning goal in extra time in the semi-final against Germany. After the final she was named player of the tournament.
With FC Barcelona, Bonmatí won both the championship and the cup in Spain last season. In the Champions League she reached the final with the team, but was defeated 0-1 by Arsenal FC.
